Course information
After passing through the center of
the town, which is busy with construction activities, you begin the long
ascent of the Col du Galibier. At a certain point you will be riding
above the tree line, with alternating, fascinating views across the
Alps. You then reach the infamous U-turn at Plan Lachat. From there,
things get more difficult. The combination of altitude and steep slope
conspire to slow you down. Towards the top of the Galibier the road
slashes through a spectacular wall of snow, which is meters
high at some places. Next comes a nearly dead straight false flat in the
direction of the village of Bourg-d Oisans. Right before the village you
turn right and, after 50 meters, arrive at the
official starting line where the climb to l’Alpe d'Huez begins. This
climb has long, difficult sections with 10% gradients and numerous
hairpin curves. The finish is in the village of l’Alpe d'Huez, near the
tunnel entrance. This film was shot during the last week in May
